Using the Frunk

Our frunk liners last better when you follow our easy-to-use guidelines for opening and closing the hood. You also have to be mindful of your load. Trust us, your frunk and frunk liner will thank you for it!

Opening

The Tesla Model 3s and Model Ys share the same process for opening the frunk. Here’s how to go about it:

1. Put the vehicle in ‘Park’
2. Engage the opening mechanism. There are three ways to do this:
3. Using the touchscreen: Tap the frunk open icon on the touchscreen
4. Using the key fob: Double-click the front trunk button
5. Using the Tesla Mobile app: Simply open the mobile app and tap the front trunk button
6. Lift the hood open

Closing

While it may seem straightforward, it’s more challenging to properly close the frunk than to open it. Unlike a traditional car, the frunk isn’t heavy enough to latch shut under its own weight. On the other hand, applying too much pressure to the center or front edge of the frunk puts you at risk of damaging it. Here’s how you close the trunk properly. 

1. Gently pull down the hood so that the striker touches the latches
2. Place both hands on the front edge of the hood and gently but firmly press down on it so that the latches engage
3. Confirm that the trunk hood has closed properly by gently pulling the lid up

Before closing the hood of both the front and rear trunks, it’s important to ensure no debris or obstacles are present before closing. Doing this reduces the risk of damage to the edge of the hood or trunk liner.

Opening the Front Trunk with No Power

It’s unlikely for the Tesla Model 3 to have insufficient voltage to open the frunk from the key fob, mobile app, or touchscreen. Still, if that happens, you can hardwire it to open by following these easy steps: 

1. Find a portable jump starter or any external source of low voltage
2. Press the top right corner of the tow eye cover so that it pivots towards you, and then gently pull the raised section towards yourself to release the tow cover
3. Expose both terminals within by pulling the wires out of the tow eye opening.
4. Connect the tow eye terminals to the low-voltage power supply by joining them positive (red wire) to positive and negative (black wire) to negative
5. Switch the low-voltage power supply, and the hood latches will immediately disengage, allowing you to open and access the frunk. You can now disconnect the power source and tow eye terminals

Emergency Release from the Trunk Interior

Climbing into the front trunk or closing the hood when someone does climb in is strongly advised against. However, should someone end up locked inside the trunk, an interior release button will enable them to exit. It glows after brief exposure to ambient light, so it’s easy to find immediately.  

To get out, the person in the trunk has to press the release button, which will unlatch the front trunk. Then, they must firmly push up on the hood.

Load Limit

Attempting to carry loads more than the capacity of the Tesla Model 3 or Y front trunks will make it difficult to close the hood, which can damage said hood and potentially damage the liner. To safely maximize load carrying, you should distribute the load evenly and always note the vehicle’s Technically Permissible Maximum Laden Mass, which is the total allowable mass of the vehicle plus cargo, fluids, and passengers.
